Why adults look beyond Replika
Replika is the best-known AI companion, with polished phone apps and a generous free tier. Adults usually leave for one of three reasons:
- Romance and adult roleplay. In early 2023 Replika sharply restricted erotic roleplay. It later restored some of it for older accounts, but adult content remains limited compared with apps built for it.
- Personality changes. Updates to the underlying model have changed how companions talk, which long-term users felt as a loss.
- Privacy. In 2025 Italy’s data protection authority fined the company behind Replika over how it handled personal data.
