The two memories of an AI girlfriend
Short-term memory (the context window). The language model behind the app reads the last part of your conversation every time it replies. Within that window she remembers everything. When the conversation gets long, the oldest messages fall out of the window and she can no longer see them.
Long-term memory. To remember beyond the window, apps save facts about you separately (your name, your job, your dog, the trip you planned) and feed them back to the model when relevant. How well an app picks, stores and recalls these facts is the real difference between apps.
Some apps add a third layer: a profile or backstory you write yourself, which is always included. This is the most reliable memory of all, because you control it.

How we test memory
Same script in every app: five facts on day 1 (a name, a job, a pet, a weekend plan, a favorite food), checked without hints on day 7 and day 30. We also note whether the app lets you see or edit what it remembers. Memory counts for 20% of every score in our methodology.
Seven ways to help her remember
- Fill in the profile. If the app has an “about me” or backstory field, put the important facts there.
- State facts plainly once: “My dog is called Max.” Clear sentences are easier to save than hints.
- Recap after long sessions, especially after voice calls: one or two sentences about what you talked about.
- Correct her right away when she gets something wrong, so the wrong fact is not reinforced.
- Use pinned or editable memories where the app offers them (Kindroid does).
- Keep one character per relationship. Switching characters often splits what the app knows.
- Stay on a paid plan if memory matters: free tiers often remember less.
A note on privacy
Everything she remembers is stored on the company’s servers. The more you tell her, the more there is to protect. Do not save identifying details like your full name, address or workplace, and read which apps keep your data private.
