Short answer

Every AI girlfriend app stores your chats on its servers, so none is fully private. The safer ones name the company behind them, say they do not sell your conversations and let you delete your data; Candy AI, for example, names its Maltese operator and does not sell chats, but uses de-identified conversations to train its AI and keeps data until you ask for deletion.

⏳ Hands-on update in progress: prices and plans on this page come from each app's public checkout page (October 23, 2026). We add our paid-account notes as each test finishes and change the date above when we do.

The table above summarises what each app’s published privacy policy says, plus how you delete your data and how billing appears. Candy AI’s row comes from its privacy notice of October 19, 2026; the other apps are filled in as we read each policy during our tests. We re-read the policies at each update; where a point still needs checking during our paid test, the table says so.

Why privacy matters more with AI girlfriends

People tell AI companions things they tell nobody else: fantasies, loneliness, health, relationships. That makes these chats some of the most sensitive data you can hand to a company.

The risk is real. In February 2024, Mozilla’s Privacy Not Included team reviewed 11 romantic AI chatbots and gave every one a warning label: most could share or sell personal data, about half did not let users delete their data, and almost all failed basic security standards. In 2025, Italy’s data protection authority fined the company behind Replika over how it handled user data.

Seven habits that protect you on any app

  1. Use a separate email you only use for subscriptions.
  2. Never share identifying details: full name, address, workplace, school, phone number.
  3. Do not upload photos of yourself or anyone you know.
  4. Use a strong, unique password and two-factor login if available.
  5. Check app permissions on your phone: an AI girlfriend has no need for your contacts or location.
  6. Delete your account when you stop, rather than just cancelling the subscription.
  7. Check your bank statement after the first payment so nothing surprises you. Our guide to billing names lists what each app shows.

The new US companion laws

Two US states now regulate AI companion apps directly:

  • New York (in force since November 5, 2025) requires companion apps to tell users they are not talking to a human, and to detect and respond to expressions of suicidal thoughts by pointing users to crisis services.
  • California, SB 243 (in force since January 1, 2026) requires a clear disclosure that the companion is AI, protocols for suicide and self-harm, and extra protections when the user is a minor.

These rules apply to the apps, not to you. We use them as part of our safety score; the two laws explained.

Deleting your data, step by step

  1. Cancel the subscription first (so you are not charged after deletion).
  2. Look for Delete account in settings; on some apps it is under Privacy or Account.
  3. If there is no button, email the support address in the privacy policy and ask for deletion of your account and all associated data.
  4. Keep the confirmation.

Questions people ask

Are AI girlfriend apps private?

Not fully. Your conversations are stored on the company's servers and may be reviewed for safety or used to improve the service, depending on the policy. Treat everything you write as something that could one day leak.

Do AI girlfriend apps sell your data?

Some policies allow sharing with advertising or analytics partners. In 2024, Mozilla's Privacy Not Included review of 11 romantic chatbots found that most could share or sell personal data. Check the "sharing" section of the policy before you sign up.

Can I delete my AI girlfriend chats?

On most apps we rank, you can delete your account from settings, which should delete your chats. Some only delete on email request. Ask for confirmation in writing.

Can my AI girlfriend chats be used to train AI?

Some policies allow it, often in anonymised form. If this matters to you, look for an opt-out in settings or a clear statement that chats are not used for training.

Which AI girlfriend app is the most private?

None is perfect. Among our picks, apps that name their operator, allow in-app deletion and do not mention ad partners score best. Use a separate email and never share identifying details, whichever app you choose.
