Why the name on the statement varies
The text on your statement (the billing descriptor) is set by the company that takes the payment, not by the app’s brand. It is usually one of:
- The operating company, often a neutral or abstract name.
- A payment processor that handles payments for many merchants.
- Apple or Google, when you subscribe through the App Store or Google Play.
The descriptor can also change over time, when an app switches processor. That is why we date every entry.
How to check before paying
- Read the terms of service. The company named there is often the one that charges you.
- Look at the checkout page, sometimes in the small print under the pay button.
- Read the confirmation email after a first small payment.
- Check your banking app the same day: pending transactions show the descriptor before it posts.
Five ways to keep it discreet

Shared statements and joint accounts
If someone else sees your statements, remember that recurring charges repeat every month or year. A one-time descriptor might go unnoticed; twelve of them will not. A store subscription or a separate card is the cleanest solution.
